Whether your grandkids and their parents are popping in for an afternoon visit or staying for a week, these tips will take your hosting game to the next level and ensure your home is a warm, welcoming haven. Get ready for quality time, laughter, and memories!

For Everyday Visits With Grandkids
- Kid-friendly snacks. Stock up on snacks, such as applesauce pouches, fruit, string cheese, or finger snacks. Tip: Movement Living co-founder Amanda recommends Love Child snacks for her little ones! Have a few disposable bibs and toddler-sized plates, utensils, and cups on hand. Ask and plan ahead for any allergies or food considerations the parents might prefer.
- Create a DIY kids’ activity kit. Set up a small activity station to keep them entertained. Include coloring sheets, craft supplies, stickers, PlayDoh, and any other favorites. This will keep the kids busy and make parents feel like their needs were anticipated.
- Portable high chair or booster seat. Provide a high chair or booster seat for mealtimes. If you don’t already own one, a foldable, portable version is a thoughtful investment that makes dining less stressful for visiting families.
- Mini play zone. Set up a corner with toys, books, and puzzles appropriate for your guests’ kids. Include a mix of quiet options for winding down and active options for keeping little ones entertained.
- On-the-go stroller or carrier. Have a lightweight stroller or baby carrier available for their use if your guests are traveling far. You can ask the parents if they have a style or brand preference. And bonus if it’s already cleaned and ready to roll.
- Childproofing must-haves. If their kids are small but mobile, install temporary baby gates or provide outlet covers in key areas to ensure their stay feels safe and relaxing. If you have any breakable items in arms reach, consider moving them to a safe spot while the kids are over.
- Treats for the whole family. Prep a batch of kid-friendly cookies and have them ready to bake together. Have aprons for the kids and adults as a fun touch!
- BONUS: If you’re going to visit your grandkids home, bring a favorite book, toy, or item from your house to add an extra special element to your visit.

For Overnight Visits With Grandkids
- Pack-and-play or crib setup. Set up a travel crib or pack-and-play ready in their room, complete with fresh sheets and a baby blanket. For extra comfort, add a white noise machine or nightlight.
- Kid-ready meals. Stock up on child-friendly meals, such as yogurt and fruit or macaroni and cheese. Tip: A kid-favorite at Movement Living co-founder Amanda’s home is bone broth and rice! Keep a few disposable bibs and toddler-sized plates, utensils, and cups on hand. Make sure to plan for any food allergies or special dietary considerations, and always ask if you have questions!
- Bring out childhood favorites. Do you still have favorite family games, kids books, albums, movies, or other items stored away? Place them in bedrooms or a common family area to rediscover together.
- Parent survival basket. Create a little survival kit for the parents, including things like energy bars, sparkling water, a mini bottle of wine, face mask, or a travel-sized pack of Advil or Tylenol. Add a humorous note: “You made it! We’ve got you.”
- Laundry station for kids. Set up a small laundry basket and have gentle, baby-safe detergent available. If you’re unsure about a brand preference, just ask! This makes it easy for parents to clean during their visit without worrying about their sensitive-skinned little ones.
- Baby essentials basket. Prepare a small basket with baby and toddler necessities like diapers (ask for their go-to brand and current size!), wipes, baby lotion, and a small pack of baby food or pouches. Amanda recommends Water Wipes and Huggies Natural Care, or the Honest Company for a splurge option. This simple touch saves parents from having to haul these essentials with them or needing to restock mid-trip.
- Have activity ideas planned. Any local parks, attractions, or places you would love to take the little ones? Write a list and offer ideas for an outing or two if there’s time! Plan for flexible time options for nap times, and consider investing in an extra car seat if driving outings are a regular occurrence.
